Asher and Amara make a splash

Asher and Amara’s bond is like no other.

The six-year-old brother and three-year-old sister were diagnosed with hypertonia, a condition where an individual has excessively high muscle tone causing stiffness.

The pair participate in hydrotherapy sessions together at The Royal Children’s Hospital to improve movement following surgeries on their dislocated hips.

“The main benefit of the pool for them has been with the undeveloped muscle and post-surgery recovery,” their father Stephen said.

“It’s been a bit of an evolving situation with understanding what support they’ve needed.”

“Hydro is something that’s really kickstarted things for them. They’ve done these intensive bursts of it that have been really palpable for them and their development.”

“They absolutely love getting into the pool and it’s nice to see them doing something that’s hugely beneficial for them.”

Asher and Amara’s mother Katherine said: “It’s amazing (the hospital has the) facility that you know they’re the only ones in the water at the time so you’re decreasing the risks of them contracting any bugs that you would expose them to in a public setting. They’ve also got all the targeted equipment to support (them).”

The siblings will continue seeing multiple specialists at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

“It’s an ongoing process for them,” Stephen said.

“They are very comfortable with the hospital and the staff.”
