Rupert gets back on the right track

Formula One superfan Rupert refuses to let the trauma from a horror go-karting crash stop him from returning to the track.

The 11-year-old spent 10 days at The Royal Children’s Hospital after his kart clipped another vehicle and flipped upside down while he was competing in a race at Puckapunyal.

Rupert’s father Tom witnessed the smash trackside while his mother Claudia saw it unfold on a live stream.

“It was terrifying and horrific to watch,” Claudia said.

Rupert suffered a severe liver laceration as well as fractures in his vertebrae and scapula.

“The first couple of days obviously weren’t that good because I was in pain,” he said.

“But then I started to heal. The doctors have been a massive help.”

Claudia was thankful that her son had avoided surgery.

“That was one of the fears in the beginning,” she said.

Rupert left hospital this week and will return home to Tasmania next week.
